Take A Walk: 清水寺 / Kiyomizu-dera Temple

松風や音羽の滝の清水を むすぶ心は涼しかるらん。

About 1.3km going to east from Gojo Guest House, you can visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple. It was founded in 778 on the site of the Otowa Waterfall in the wooded hills east of Kyoto, and derives its name from the fall’s pure waters.

The architecture is famous because the main hall is built on a steep cliff, supported by many pillars without using nails. The famous stage, 13 meters high, is part of Kiyomizu Temple’s main hall. Traditional Japanese theater is performed on the stage as part of the temple’s rituals.

It is walking distance from Gojo Guest House. Going up hills though either Gojo-zaka or Kiyomizu-zaka street, you can see the temple after walking about 20-25min. There are shops, restaurants, and a craft beer & sake bar for tourists on the streets. It was around 5pm, so shops were already closed at the day.

The reroofing work of the Main Hall, which began in February 2017, was completed at the end of 2019 and the scaffolding structure that had enveloped the Main Hall was removed in February 2020. The roof of the Main Hall has now been completely restored with new hinoki (Japanese cypress) bark thatch for the first time in 50 years.

I spend about 2 hours in total from Gojo to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and going back to Gojo. If you have time, it is nice to visit Ninen-zaka, Sannen-zaka, Nene Street, Kodaiji Temple, Yasaka Shrine, and Maruyama Park. Those spots are good to explore traditional Kyoto. This area is also famous for Kiyomizu ware. You can find many pottery shops around there.

There is a nice coffee stand near Yasaka pagoda named %Arabica. Their latte is one of the best in Kyoto and it’s famous for minimal interior design and symbolic logo. It’s also recommended to buy their coffee beans which are good for gifts.

There are many places to visit around the HIgashiyama area and you maybe can have your own local Kyoto experience.
